5/5/07

Roswell, NM -- The Bronco baseball team concluded the 2007 season with a four-game series with El Paso Community College.  EPCC took both games in El Paso 7-2 and 16-8.  In Roswell on Saturday, the Broncos made things close falling 5-4 and 10-8.

EPCC held NMMI scoreless in game one until the seventh inning when the Broncos were able to push two runs across.  Carlos Marrujo had a pinch-hit RBI single scoring Michael Fiorentino.  Karl Johnston followed with another run scoring single.  Ismael Solis took the loss for the Broncos, pitching five complete innings while allowing six runs on nine hits.

In game two, the Broncos jumped to an early 5-0 lead.  EPCC answered with seven unanswered runs of their own.  NMMI scratched for another run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 7-6 but EPCC put up three more runs.  Down 10-6 in the top of the sixth inning, the Broncos battled for two more runs.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tejanos ended the game via the eight-run rule with a walk-off grand slam.

Back in Roswell for game three, the Broncos got a solid pitching performance from Ed Vidales.  He pitched a complete game, seven innings allowing five runs on seven hits.  The Broncos had scoring opportunities in the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to get the runners in.

Game four was another high scoring affair.  The teams combined for eighteen runs on twenty-nine hits.  The Broncos led 4-3 going into the fifth inning before the Tejanos put up three runs.  In the seventh inning, EPCC led 9-5 when NMMI scored three runs to make it 9-6.  EPCC added another run in their half of the ninth to make the score 10-8.

Left fielder Sean Kaerwer led the Broncos while going 7-12 (.583) and scoring five runs.  Robert Nordorf provided the Broncos with solid relief from the bull pen again as he racked up six innings in three appearances, allowing only two runs while striking out two batters.

The Broncos conclude the season with a record of 12-41 and 3-29 in the WJCAC.
