New Athletic Training Program Propels Growth in Athletic Department

Saying that things have grown in the athletic department at New Mexico Military Institute would be an understatement.  Over the past year, there have been many new additions to the athletic program.  One of the most notable additions has been the development of the athletic training program along with the construction of a new state of the art athletic training facility.

Jose Barron, NMMI’s Director of Athletic Training, is one of the key components in the progression of the new program.  Barron is a certified athletic trainer with over thirteen years of experience in the athletic training field.  He served as part of the Houston Astros Baseball Club’s athletic training staff for three years prior to coming to NMMI.  He has also been involved with several rehabilitation clinics.

The new athletic training program is an academic program designed to align with certain four-year universities athletic training programs.  As part of the new Health, Physical Education and Recreation program at NMMI, the athletic training education program offers six classes for interested cadets to take.  Some of the courses that are offered include Medical Terminology, Medical Conditions, Introduction to Athletic Training, Sport Injury Assessment and Practicum in Athletic Training.

One of the key features of the new athletic training program is the new athletic training facility.  Funds were appropriated by the New Mexico State Legislature in the 2006 session and construction began in November of 2006.  The new facility, located in the basement of the Godfrey Athletic Center, will more than double the capacity for simultaneous treatments with over 2,000 square feet of usable space.

Some of the features of the new athletic training facility include a private examination room with state of the art diagnostic equipment.  A patient reception area along with training staff offices will be located within the facility.  Space for movement based rehabilitation is another key feature.  Some of the new equipment upgrades include electrical stimulation machines, ultrasounds and laser therapy devices.

Plans calling for improvements such as a modern hydrotherapy area (including cold and hot immersion pools) and a new classroom and study area for students in the athletic training education program with full multimedia capabilities have now been completed.

Outside of the major Division I universities, the new athletic training facility will be the most modern athletic training facility in the region.  Barron adds, “The facilities, staffing and program development will go a long way to help fulfill our current mission and allow for the continued growth.  This is a giant step in the process of going from good to great.”
