Hitchcock, LTC Ted, USAF Ret.,
Social Science Department Head
NMMI(1993) Associate Professor of History
B.A., LaGrange College
M.S.S., University of Mississippi
Ph.D., University of Mississippi
A native Pennsylvanian, who moved to Florida during high
school, Ted Hitchcock earned his degrees in History and
International Affairs at La Grange College (B.A.), and the
University of Mississippi (M.S.S. and Ph.D.). Hoping to utilize
his education in the service of his nation, he joined the United
States Air Force in 1971. Fortunately, he was assigned to the
Intelligence career field as well as the United States Air Force
Academy. Both career fields were extremely rewarding. While at
USAFA he was able to bring first-hand experiences gained from his
worldwide assignments to the classroon. He spent 13 years of a 22
year career teaching cadets and supervising young instructors.
Although always keeping classroom teaching at the forefront of
his priorities, Lt. Col. Hitchcock also benefited from research
opportunities. Garland Press published his dissertation, Timothy
Walker: Antebellum Lawyer as part of its Distinguished
Studies In America Legal and Constitutional History series. He
also edited The Intelligence Revolution:A Historical
Perspective (1991) and The Intelligence Revolution and
Modern Warfare (1996). In addition, Ted has also published
book review and given papers at various professional conferences.
He has participated in summer programs at Yale University (1991),
the Institute in Western American Studies at Cody, Wyoming
(1995), the USMA-ROTC Military History Fellowship at West Point
(1996), and traveled to England and France (1996), Greece and
Turkey (1997), and Spain and Portugal (1998) to continue his
historical research.
In 1993, Ted retired from the Air Force and accepted a
position to teach at New Mexico Military Institute. He was
selected by Phi Theta Kappa as the 1994 Outstanding Teacher, won
the John F. Burton Professorship (1995), and has been nominated
to Who's Who Among American's Teachers (1996-1998). He has served
on numerous faculty committees (i.e. Superintendent's ECP and
Salary), directed the 1997-98 Lyceum Program, and chaired the
Faculty Senate in 1997-1998. Like his sisters and late brother,
who were also educators, Ted takes great pride in his good
fortune to contribute to the education of America's youth.
