Umberger graduated with distinction from the University
of
Maine
at Orono with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science in 1975.
He was voted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor
Society. He was recognized as a Distinguished Military Student and designated a
Distinguished Military Graduate and was also commissioned as a Military Intelligence
Officer in the United States Army.
While
in the Army, Umberger served intelligence tours with the 3rd Armored
Division in
Germany
and the famous 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) at
Fort Riley
,
Kansas
and in the
Persian Gulf
during Desert Storm. He served as a
Military Intelligence Company Commander at Fort Huachuca, Arizona and as an Assistant Professor of
Military Science at New Mexico Military Institute.
LTC Umberger served military-diplomatic tours with the American embassies
in
Dhaka,
Bangladesh
and New Delhi,
India. LTC Umberger is a graduate of the
Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses,
Combined Arms Service Staff School,
U.S.
Army Command and General Staff Course, and the Bangladesh Army Defense Services
Command and Staff
College. His military awards and
decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service
Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Defense
Achievement Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, three Overseas Ribbons.

Umberger’s academic degrees also include a Masters of Public Administration in
Administration in Management, and a Master of Arts Degree in National Security
Affairs with an emphasis on Asian Studies from the
Naval
Postgraduate
School
in Monterey,
California.
Umberger
retired from the U.S. Army in 1996 and worked for the Commandant of Cadets as a
Troop Leadership Advisor for four years at NMMI.

Umberger
joined the faculty in school year 2000-2001. In school year 2004-2005, Umberger
was the recipient of the prestigious John F. Burton Chair and conducted research
on the history of the Navajo Long Walk. Umberger has also published articles in
several military journals that are distributed in over sixty countries.

Umberger is married to the former Judith Daniels and has two daughters and five grandchildren.
