Captain Melissa Jones Witt graduated from New Mexico State University
with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in English.
After completing her Bachelor's degree at NMSU, she went on to
Eastern New Mexico University where she completed her teaching
licensure and earned a Master's degree in education with an emphasis
in secondary education. CPT Jones Witt began her teaching career at
Roswell High School, where she taught for five years. While at
Roswell High School, CPT Jones Witt taught everything from psychology
to reading and on to advanced placement/honors
English.
CPT Jones Witt participates in numerous community and
professional organizations. She is an active member of Roswell
Community League and will soon be joining the board for Big
Brothers, Big Sisters. Additionally, she is a teacher
consultant, leadership team member, and fellow of the High Plains
Writing Project, which is a satellite member of The National Writing
Project--an organization that uses best practices to teach teachers
to teach writing.
As a teacher and professional, CPT Jones Witt has presented at
the New Mexico Council of Teachers of English annual conference (and
will be presenting at the conference again this year) and
has studied at St. John's College in the Tecelote Group (where
teachers study "great books" and their influence on and reflection
of society and culture). CPT
Jones Witt has was awarded the Character Counts Teacher of Character
Bronze Award and the Teacher of Merit Award from the National Association
for Academic Excellence.
In her spare time, CPT Jones Witt enjoys reading, discussing
politics, and writing. She even won a first place award in a
short fiction contest! One of her favorite hobbies is skiing,
and although she knows she will never be on the USA Olympic Ski
Team, she fancies herself a pretty good skier.
CPT Jones Witt thinks that it is essential to continue learning
and gaining knowledge in her field. She continually attends
conferences, classes, and workshops to help her grow professionally
and intellectually. Last year she participated in St. John's
Tecelote Group (where teachers study "great books" and their
influence on and reflection of society and culture), and is again
participating in it this year. Furthermore, she has attended
the annual conventions for all of the following: the National
Council of Teachers of English, The National Writing Project, the
International Reading Association (twice), and New Mexico Council of
Teachers of English.
CPT Jones Witt plans to further her education by taking more
graduate courses in English and literature and, someday, getting her
Ph.D.
